FOUR SHADES OF WHITE:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The four body shades within the CompoSite system include:
    Si 0, 1, 2, 3
  • These shades can be used for mono layering in full direct veneer cases, or in conjunction with the Si E – Enamel for a two-layer technique
  • The most similar shades to the vita shade guide are Si1, 2 & 3 which share similarities with A1, A2 and A3 (but have a more opalescent effect and a higher value)
  • The highest value shade (0) have been developed to help restore the growing population of bleaching cases

THE #WHITEOLOGY APPROACH IN DIRECT VENEERING BY DR OSAMA SHAALAN
A YOUNG MALE PATIENT (25 YEARS) VISITED THE PRACTICE TO IMPROVE HIS SMILE. HE WAS KEEN TO IMPROVE:
  • The general aesthetics of his smile (he had composite veneers already which he was unhappy with)
  • His confidence
  • The whiteness of his smile

The initial restorations were causing the patient problems. Primarily, the gingival embrasures were not properly considered when restoring the teeth. This meant that the patient could not floss properly and consequently had gingivitis.
THE TREATMENT
At the patients request, it was decided to replace his composite veneers on the upper 8 teeth.
After isolating and etching the teeth, bonding agent was applied in preparation for White Dental Beauty CompoSite Enamel shade (siE) – Figure 1.

The next stage in the restoration process involved layering and shaping the mamelons. For this step, White Dental Beauty CompoSite dentin shade Si 1 was used (Figure 3).
White Dental Beauty CompoSite Si 1 was light cured for 40 seconds. The recommended light output is a minimum of 500 mW/cm2.

QUESTION
How much Enamel should I use?
white dental beauty professional composite system logo
ANSWER
If an older patient with either worn incisal edges or just from day to day habits, has thin enamel due to age; we do not suggest use of an enamel shade. Often, providing the shade and form are correct; we only need to use one body shade with CompoSite, really simplifying the technique. In instances where a younger patient requires a little more brightness, the Si E shade (Enamel) is the perfect option, as it really takes up the colour of the body material for a natural appearance.
